California Family Leave

The state of California harbors a paid family leave insurance program that extends unemployment compensation to include employees who take time from work to care for a critically ill member of the family or a new minor child. Often referred to as the Family Temporary Disability Insurance program, the California family leave was enacted in 2002. Benefits available under the leave calculate out to about 55 percent of the employee's normal earnings. A qualifying person can collect up to six weeks of benefits in a 12-month time frame.

Fast Facts

  • Despite the fact the Paid Family Leave insurance program was founded in 2002, a 2007 survey indicated that only 28 percent of the state's adult population knew about the program.
  • The states of New Jersey and Washington are the only other states in America to offer paid family leave benefits.
  • An employee is not entitled to Paid Family Leave benefits if he or she also qualifies for State Disability Insurance, Worker's Compensation, or Unemployment Compensation Insurance.
