Employment Discrimination Disability

In 2008, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) received almost 14,500 charges of disability discrimination, resolved almost 16,000 charges, and recovered over $57 million dollars in monetary benefits. The disability rights movement, which began in the 1970s and has roots in the Civil Rights movement, has been instrumental in battling employment discrimination based on disability. Thanks to laws such as the Rehabilitation Act of 1964 and the ADA, discrimination based upon disability in the workplace is now illegal. After the Rehabilitation Act was passed, it became the federal government's goal to promote the hiring and retention of workers with disabilities by being a model employer of individuals with disabilities, and by practicing employment non-discrimination and reasonable accommodation. The federal government has also targeted specific groups of people with disabilities in order to reverse the historical discrimination that has occurred amongst members of these groups.
