Government Pension Offset

A Government Pension Offset is a Social Security benefit which some of the employee's spousal Social Security benefit may be offset if the worker has some kind of a government pension from their place of work. This offset only applies to spousal benefits and not to those of the employee themselves. In the case that the Government Pension Offset does apply, the spousal Social Security benefit is reduced to two thirds of the federal pension where the employment is not covered by their social security. There are certain kinds of employees who are exempt from the Government Pension Offset, including those who are automatically covered under the Civil Service Retirement System Offset or the Federal Employees Retirement System Offset. There are certain guidelines which apply in regards to these additional offsets an the way that they affect exemption from the Government Pension Offset.
