New Jersey Labor Law

The current minimum wage in New Jersey is $7.15 per hour, to rise to $7.25 on July 24th, 2009. Those not covered by minimum wage are automobile salespeople, outside salespeople, minors (not in retail food service), beauty culture occupations, laundry, cleaning and dyeing, light manufacturing, and hotel or motel jobs. The suggested hourly rate for employees earning tips is $2.13 but if this amount plus the tips one receives is less than the minimum, his/her employer must make up the difference. Overtime is any hours worked in excess of 40 hour and is paid at the rate of 1 ᄑ of regular pay. The final wages for the fired are due on by the next regular payday. New Jersey is an "at will" state and either the employer or employee are free to end the work relationship without reason or cause.
