Pension Planning

Pension planning is arguably one of the worst implemented strategies at both the private and public levels. For example, the two largest public pension funds in the United States, one serving public workers in California and the other serving teachers in California, have consistently made headlines as being in dire straits, underfunded, and unable to continue indefinitely. The state of Illinois' public pension fund, also serving public workers and teachers, is estimated to be well over $45 billion dollars. In the private sector, the track record of pension planning is no better, and regularly, American workers retiring receive no pension that they probably contributed towards during the entire working careers. Congress, however, has attempted to remedy the situation through the ERISA, which regulates private pension funds, provides tax incentives, and started a non-profit insurance corporation insuring private pension funds. Even with these provisions, mismanagement, poor economic climate, and more commonly than acknowledged, criminal activity surrounding private pensions essentially steal regular workers' retirement funds. As a response to this, many companies now offer alternative retirement planning procedures, which include IRA and 401 (k) accounts that are sometimes matched with company contributions. Additionally, individuals frequently take it upon themselves to save for their own retirement, as they no longer expect social security to cover their retirement years.
