Religious Discrimination Workplace

The Federal laws prohibiting religious discrimination in the workplace are enforced by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). Specifically, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits any and all employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. The 1964 Act makes it illegal for an employer to fail or refuse to hire or to terminate any individual because of their individual religious beliefs. It is also illegal for an employer to classify applicants or employees based on an individual's religion in a way that will deprive the individual or harm them in any way. Additionally, the Civil Rights Act of 1991, which provides many protections, including money damages where employment discrimination was intentional. As a general rule, treating employees differently, harassing them or denying a reasonable accommodation based on their religious beliefs or practices (or lack thereof) is religious discrimination and in prohibited in the workplace.
