Social Security Disability Work

The Supplemental Security Income Program (SSI) establish rules which make it possible for the handicapped and elderly to work while subsidizing them with monthly benefits as income and health coverage. Those who qualify are given a nine month on-the-job trial period, where each will receive full monthly benefits regardless of how much he/she earns on the job, as long as their work performance is reported while having the physical impairment. They are often assisted by staff in the SSI program in finding jobs in various occupations. Each individual's performance is analyzed to indicate their ability in achieving Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA). "Subsidies" or "Special Conditions" are given to those who perform below the SGA level as extra supervision, fewer duties than other coworkers performing the same job, or a personal coach assisting them while working.
