Texas Employment Law

Texas employment law is similar to most states in that employees are considered "at will," meaning they can be terminated or quit at any time for any reason, as long as that reason is not illegal. In Texas, however, there is a difference in how employees working under contract can be fired. While in most states employees who are working under contract can only be let go according to the guidelines written in the contract, in Texas an employee under contract can also be fired at any time unless it is clearly stated in the contract that the employee will only be fired under specific circumstances. As far as workplace safety, that is handled by the Worker's Health and Safety Division of the Texas Worker's Compensation Commission. For most discrimination and insurance issues, Texas follows Federal laws.
