Workplace Age Discrimination

Workplace age discrimination is a rising issue of contention among older workers expecting to work much longer into life than their parents' generation. Factors attributing to this include increased access to medical and healthcare lengthening average lifespan, relatively sedentary forms of work compatible with aging workers, and the financial burden more older individuals experience in their later years. Essentially, federal laws preserve many aging workers' rights to retain and obtain employment regardless of their age. Forced or mandatory retirement ages are considered illegal in most private industry sectors, but numerous exceptions exist in critical occupations such as airline workers, firefighters, police offices, and even, corporate executives. Additionally, older workers, defined as those over the age of forty, cannot be discriminated against by their employer regarding pay or benefits. Benefits is especially critical, as the older a worker becomes, the more susceptible to medical costs, healthcare needs, and other use of healthcare insurance benefits will occur.
