In very general terms, the Family Leave Act affords parents the ability to take time off of work to care for your children after their birth or when they are sick. It also gives a parent the ability to take time for family emergency leave, such as serious illness of a child or spouse or caring for an immediate family member who has a serious health condition. The Family leave policy gives employees up to 12 workweeks of unpaid leave per year to care for family emergencies. Employees can also use the time when they are suffering from a serious health condition as well. Employees do not have to use the time consecutively, and can use the 12 weeks as they are needed throughout the year. Also, the employee should give 30 days notice of the leave if possible, or give notice whenever practical if 30 days advance is not possible
