In order to ensure that individuals do not get caught without insurance following their job loss, Congress passed COBRA. This law says that an employer must allow employees to retain their insurance coverage as long as the employees pay for the insurance. This will also ensure the employee is not excluded from gaining coverage later due to a preexisting condition.
Although COBRA continuation coverage can be expensive, a recent government subsidy has eased the burden for many employees. This subsidy allows employees to receive COBRA continuation coverage while paying only 35% of the cost of coverage.
