U.S. EEOC Files Suit against AT&T

August 20, 2009

AT&T, one of the country’s largest telephone service providers is currently being sued by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission for age discrimination among its employees. According to the suit, older employees who applied for re-hire were denied their applications, because they had opted to leave under early retirement plans.

Younger workers who had not left the company for early retirement, but for other- personal- reasons were given the opportunity to be re-hired. Many individuals, young and old, have attempted to get their jobs back after the recent economic slump.

According to federal law, a public or privately owned company cannot discriminate in its hiring, firing or re-hiring practices, based solely on an individual’s age, gender, sexual preference, religion, color or nationality. The spokesperson for AT&T refused to provide comment when he was asked by the New York Times about the lawsuit.
