Sexual Harassment involves many different kinds of behaviors and situations. As such, the if you feel you are a victim of Sexual Harassment, the type of help you need and the channels you use to get that help will differ, and are dependent upon the nature and severity of the occurrence. Also, the location of the harassment often plays a key role in who you report the incident to.  While these factors all play a part in who you should report the incident(s) to, they should never deter you from moving forward with seeking help.        

Confronting Your Harasser

One of the first steps often taken is to confront your harasser and inform them their behavior is unacceptable and it needs to cease. This can be done face-to-face, through a letter or through a third party.  This step applies to situations where no physical assault or touching has occurred or threats have been made. Often times, in lesser cases, the harasser is unaware of the severity of their actions, and this step can end harassment.          

Beginning the Process of Reporting Sexual Harassment

While step one provides solutions in a small number of lesser cases, cases that are more severe require more action.  What this action is dependent upon how severe the incident(s) was and where it took place. It is also important now to begin to document your case. Write down as many details, in detail, as possible:

  • Where the incident(s) happened
  • When the incident(s) happened
  • What the exact nature of the incident(s) was- detail what the physical and/or mental details where, such as what may have been said, what touching may have occurred, etc.
  • Who, if anyone, witnessed the incident(s)- get full names

Reporting Sexual Harassment

Once you have detailed all your information and have your case together, you can proceed to report your incident through the proper channels.

  • If your incident is of a much more sever nature, and includes immediate threats to your person, such as stalking or direct threats, then you should immediately report your incident to the police.
  • If you have been the victim of a sexual assault, you should immediately seek medical help and report the incident to the police.

If you are in a work environment, you should contact your HR department and follow your company guidelines. From the beginning, request copies of all documentation. If the harassment continues, report it immediately to someone higher in the chain of command. If it continues, seek legal help. However, if the incident constitutes a crime, you should report it to the police.
